Mystic River Learning Center is an independent learning center which provides a genuine twenty-first century alternative to the outdated system used in most schools. Mystic River Learning Center believes that the best learning happens in a non-competitive environment where young people are respected for who they are and not for what they can do.
Children of all ages work together to build a community that fosters cooperation, encouragement and responsibility. The assumption is made that every person wants to learn and has an innate curiosity about the world into which they are born. Children (with input from parents) will therefore be given autonomy over their own learning and the freedom to use the resources of their choice.
Mystic River Learning Center offers a wide range of classes for which children can sign up and also provides classes or resources on any subject which is requested.
Good use is being made of the many resources in the area such as museums, historic houses and libraries. Mystic River Learning Center is a place where members of the community can share their knowledge and talents by offering workshops and classes and where people of all ages can share a joy of learning.
Healthy citizenship will be emphasized through integrating activities with the community and creating a democratic atmosphere where people of all ages share in the decision making. Community service is an essential part of the life of the center. Mystic River Learning Center encourages the acquisition and enjoyment of numeracy and literacy skills but acknowledges that each person has their own unique method of learning.
In the past the center has offered regular book groups, a theater and music program, debates, arts and crafts and yoga.
An overall consciousness about our role in the world and what each person can do to make it a better place will be encouraged.
